Official launch of the «ZuriACT: Zurich Accessible CiTy» pilot project

On July 11 and 12, the official launch of the pilot project «ZuriACT: Zurich Accessible CiTy» took place at the premises of the DSI. This project promotes barrier-free and inclusive mobility in District 1 of the city of Zurich.

Existing routing services and digital maps often do not provide useful guidance for mobility-impaired people because relevant information (for example, sidewalk slope, crossings, and ramps) that meets the needs of these populations is missing.

This leads to incomplete route suggestions or results that do not always correspond to real-life conditions. The ZüriACT pilot project aims to remedy this situation by providing the basis for a systematic collection of spatial accessibility data for and with residents in Zurich. The project is a collaboration between the University of Zurich (DSI & Departement of Geography) and the City of Zurich.

Highlights of the inaugural workshop on July 11 and 12 at the DSI's facilities included:

Focus Group Discussion: An interactive focus group discussion provided a platform for participants to express their hopes, concerns, and expectations related to sidewalk accessibility in the city. This open dialogue helped to gather valuable insights and know-how about sidewalk mobility needs in Zurich from a diverse group of participants, including persons with disabilities, older adults, caregivers, and parents with pushchairs.

Primary Data Collection with Project Sidewalk tool: Participants were introduced to the Project Sidewalk web application and experienced firsthand data collection using street view imageries and virtual audits.

Call for Participation: Data collection training workshop

Join us for an engaging workshop focused on virtual spatial accessibility data collection and gaining insights from diverse participants.
This workshop aims to enhance our understanding of street elements (stairs, ramps, curbs, etc.) and their impact on accessibility for individuals with different mobility needs.

We invite persons with disabilities, older adults, caregivers, and parents with pushchairs interested in enriching sidewalk accessibility data in District 1 of the city of Zurich to participate,  sharing their valuable perspectives, and contributing to moving toward a more accessible city of Zurich.
The first round of training workshops will take place in the following timeslots:

11 August 2023, 14:30 – 16:00
16 August 2023, 18:30 – 20:00
17 August 2023, 11:00 – 12:30
18 August 2023, 14:00 – 15:30
