Congratulations: ACL Test of Time Award for Rico Sennrich

The Association for Computational Linguistics honours DSI member Prof. Rico Sennrich for a paper that has had a lasting impact on natural language processing.

Autor: DSI Communication

Prof. Rico Sennrich, Professor at the Department of Computational Linguistics at UZH, has been awarded the Test of Time Paper Award by the Association for Computational Linguistics (ACL). The award recognises papers published ten years ago that continue to have a significant impact today.

The winning paper, «Neural Machine Translation of Rare Words with Subword Units», was published in 2016 by Rico Sennrich together with Barry Haddow and Alexandra Birch. The method it introduced – breaking words down into smaller units – has become a standard: it underpins the tokenization used in virtually all of today's large language models.
