DSI Insights: How AI technology is helping refugees and recognizing propaganda

In our first DSI Insights 2025, Kilian Sprenkamp, PhD student at the Digital Society Initiative (DSI), uses concrete examples to show how Large Language Models (LLMs) can help with rapid information processing and effective communication in crisis situations.

With the release of ChatGPT in November 2022, the public perception of artificial intelligence (AI) has changed dramatically. There has often been discussion about the impact of chatbots being able to program websites or summarize an entire book within seconds. However, so-called large language models (LLMs) such as GPT-4 have even greater potential. In crisis situations, for example, fast information processing and effective communication are of the utmost importance. LLMs can provide important support here. On the other hand, AI technologies also harbor risks. This raises the question of how public institutions can make sensible use of this technology.
