DSI Media Workshop on disinformation

Disinformation has become an increasingly important issue in recent years. The DSI has made this the focus of its fourth Strategy Lab and has thus also defined its thematic focus for 2024. Accordingly, the fourth edition of the DSI Media Workshop also addressed this topic.

With its media workshop, the Digital Society Initiative (DSI) of the University of Zurich offers media professionals background information and the opportunity to help shape the content of the event. The fourth edition dealt with the DSI topic of the year 2024: disinformation.

Dr. Daniel Vogler provided the first deep dive on the topic «Von Deepfakes, Social Bots und Alternativmedien – Einordnungen zur Problematik von Desinformation in der Schweiz». Daniel Vogler is deputy director of the fög – Research Center for the Public Sphere and Society at the University of Zurich – which publishes the «Quality of the Media» yearbook, which is widely covered and cited by the media. As part of his journalism and communication research, he also focuses on disinformation in the digital space.

Sylvia Sasse provided a link to Russia's current disinformation campaigns. She is a professor of Slavic literature. In this context, she also deals with the topic of disinformation and looks in particular at the narratives and rhetoric in Russian disinformation, which already has a long tradition and was practiced well before the Russian attack on Ukraine in 2022. Her lecture: «Desinformation ist nicht das Gegenteil von Information. Über die Geschichte einer politischen Strategie aus russischer Perspektive».

Dr. Sacha Altay presented the question «Rethinking misinformation and what (not) to do about it?» He is a psychologist and researcher at the Institute of Political Science and the Digital Democracy Lab, which studies the impact of digital technology on politics and democracy. He focuses on disinformation, misperceptions and trust.

Angela Müller finally provided a perspective from a non-governmental organization. Her input addressed the question of how Swiss platform regulation can contribute to a healthy public debate. Angela Müller is the managing director of AlgorithmWatch CH and focuses on the impact of algorithms on human rights and society, as well as their regulation. In this context, she also deals with AI and was named one of «100 Women in AI Ethics» worldwide in 2024.

The DSI Media Workshop is supported by Stiftung Mercator Schweiz.
