Philosophy of AI Presentation Series: Legitimacy of Non-Compliant IT Use

The aim of this lecture series – organized by the DSI Community Ethics – is to present various debates in the philosophy of AI. The lectures will be given by experts in the field from various disciplines related to AI and digital innovation. The general objective of the series is to promote exchange and interaction between various fields of expertise, including (but not limited to) philosophy, engineering, information systems, computer science, law, political science and sociology.

In this session, Christoph Burtscher, Visiting Fellow at Henley Business School and PhD Researcher at the Universität Innsbruck, will give a lecture entitled «Legitimacy of Non-Compliant IT Use». His legitimacy paper is influenced by his research area of non-compliant IT use. Based on mainly management but also some IS literature, he used an organizing and then broad-theorizing review approach to analyze the available literature and synthesize the understanding of legitimacy, resulting in a thematic map through thematic analysis. In the theorizing review, he applied a praxeological neo-sociotechnical system lens to transfer the legitimacy phenomenon to the IS discipline, specifically to non-compliant IT use, developing a technology legitimacy framework with boundary conditions, legitimacy propositions, and a model.
